The Italian government will produce marijuana for therapeutic use. Paradoxically, it will be the Armed Forces to oversee the cultivation in a chemical plant in Florence that presently produces pharmaceuticals for the military. Today it has extended its activity into the private sector by initiating its own production of cannabis derived pharmaceuticals currently imported from abroad at elevated costs.
For the first time Italy will produce its own cannabinoid based medicine aimed at helping pain relief in patients with AIDS and cancer. The proposal initially was not accepted by all ministers. Unlike the the Minister of Defense, Roberta Pinotti, who gave his consenses for some time now, the Minister of Health, Beatrice Lorenzin, held some reservations due to fears that this may pave the road to legalization.
